Why SaaS rocks -- or, thank you SaaS users

Why SaaS rocks -- or, thank you, SaaS users

There has been a visible decline in conventional software development, lately: the world seems to be moving towards SaaS, or Software As A Service. I don't even need to back this with statistics or reports: all you have to do, is see what most people do when they use a computer. Experts have explained this shift in a variety of ways (for example, it makes more economical sense now that there's the Internet, they are multi-platform, no installation required, etc.).

More UI advancements: time charts, new message form, new milestone page

Hi there,

In my previous post I talked about some of the improvements that made it into Apollo early last week. There is more! We worked on some elements of the interface based on your feedback. Here we go:

Time charts in time reports

When you see a time report (in the Projects dashboard), you can see what people are working on. When you click on a person's name, you now also see a pie chart that shows you which projects they have been working on.

New features: mark as unread, auto-subscribe, admin unsubscribe, comment notifications for milestones

Hi there,

Apollo is under very active development. Looking at our changelog, you can see that we are constantly adding new features, updating existing ones and fixing small problems. Reading the changelog is definitely boring -- plus, you don't get to see screenshots and pick the best of the best! So, here we go. Here are some of the new features that made it into Apollo yesterday:

Mark as unread

We all do it: we all want to virtually go back in time, and mark a message as unread so that we can answer it later.

Project templates with Apollo

Project templates was one of the most requested features in Apollo (up there with iCal support and reply-by-email). Well, I am very proud to announce that Apollo now has project templates. I was having a discussion with Andrea a few weeks ago, about project templates. I said something along the lines of "Well, it's pretty straightforward right? I mean, a template is just like a normal project, yes?" Andrea answered instantaneously: "What about task's deadlines that need to be different? And the activity log that needs to be generated? And the Files section that doesn't apply? And the --". I interrupted him: he was right. Project templates were tricky at best. Well, ladies and gentlemen: here they are, project templates in Apollo! Click on Projects on the left, and then on the Templates submenu:

This is who we are, and this is why we reach out to people

This entry is longer than expected. Feel free to read it if you want some insider's information about Apollo, the people behind it, and what goes on behind the scenes.

The short story:

  • We are here to make great software. Really great software
  • We are not here to sell out and make millions.
  • Apollo works thanks to Apollo's mastermind, Andrea.
  • We are pushing Apollo on our own (competitors, read this)

To know the long story, read on!

Our first newsletter went out: the Murphy's chronicles

Yesterday, we sent our first newsletter. It was a pretty important moment too! Thousands of people were going to receive it, and we really did our best to get it 100% right.

If I wanted to say that "100%" confidently, I would also need to make several announcement. So, here we go.

The first one is that we invented the time machine! Yes, that's right: when we wrote that we released Apollo initially in July 2011, we obviously meant it -- it wasn't a typo.

Notification options and see tasks assigned to your company or anybody

Hi Friends,

This entry is to announce two exciting features in Apollo:

  • Advanced notification options (with daily digests available!)
  • Possibility to see, in My tasks, tasks assigned to "Anyone" or to your company

As a member of staff at Applicom, I got to use these features well in advance and I just couldn't believe how much they helped me in my day-to-day work. I can see why a lot of users requested them!

So, here are the details.

Hide task lists

Hi friends! When working on a large project, with several task lists, things could get a little complicated: people often wanted to hide task lists that would only be relevant much later in the project (they might belong to a milestone that is months away, for example!).

This is no longer the case: task lists can now be "hidden" by project administrators.
